My Golf Life - Day 8 (10th January 2017) Rory to Callaway (For How Long?)

Is the fact that Rory is "free" to play what he likes a help or a hindrance? My thoughts are initially a hindrance, new boys with new toys. Watch this space - but (and we can come back to this in a few months) I can see Mr McIlroy mixing it up a bit more with his golf clubs this season. First change ? Yeah, i hope he packed that Scotty putter ........

Hi, I am @robertscross and welcome to Day 8 of My Golf Life 2017 I think about golf every day, without fail. Maybe not daily but hourly or even (no pun intended) “ByTheMinute” I am a golf junkie. I can’t help it. If you’ve missed days 1- 7 then have a little look here http://www.bytheminute.co/users/1430

So, the rumours WERE true !!! With the news late in 2016 that Nike would no longer be manufacturing golf equipment, the golf world has been waiting with hushed breath to see where their "athletes" would go. Rory, Tiger, Paul Casey, Koepka, Russell Henley to name a few..... All those guys quickly jumped ship (Tiger waited a bit) to TaylorMade drivers.

With the off season quickly following - players had time to try new equipment and the freedom to change as suited. Rory moved back to a Scotty Cameron putter (prototype) and quickly won two events in FedEx Play-Offs culminating in winning the whole lot! So am I surprised to see a complete change of clubs for 2017. In a word, yes

Starting this week Rory has replaced his M2 driver for a Callaway Epic version, irons are now Callaway APEX MB, wedges Vokeys. All of which i can kind of understand.

You test it, you like it, the stats add up, you use it. But after struggling for months, (and maybe a large generalisation here), but I think his putting during this years majors, certainly played its part in a fruitless 2016 for Rory. He addressed those issues, worked hard with Phil Kenyon and got a Scotty back in his bag. Success followed, improved putting results ensued.

My major question here is why change putter ? On the back of a successful transition to a putter that worked - how good was his putting at last years Ryder Cup ? But - Its seems a new Odyssey flat stick is in the bag this week. Another new putter. I'll leave you with a little question ..........
