French Open Day 11 Round up

You’ll never guess what? Wait for it…. we had play at Roland-Garros today! Real, live tennis!

Trying to balance up the ladies draw, first up on centre was Serena v Svitolina. Blink and you missed it- Serena clearly wasn’t hanging around, she won 6-1 6-1 in a hour and two minutes.

Next up was Djokovic v Bautista Agut. We rejoined this one in the third set with Nole 4-1 up. He duly wrapped up the set 6-1, but was made to work hard for his victory as the Spaniard fought really hard in the fourth set.

Djokovic eventually won 3-6 6-4 6-1 7-5 and is finally into the quarters.

The one we were waiting for started in the afternoon- Murray v Gasquet. Murray got into a 5-2 lead in the first set but uncharacteristically let it slide with a series of unforced errors (and dodgy drop shots) as Gasquet started hitting the lines. Set Gasquet 7-5

The second set was a similar affair- Murray got into a lead but Gasquet pegged him back. This time it went to a tie break but Murray finally started playing with confidence and he took it 7-6 (7-3)

The third set was over quickly- Murray came out all guns blazing and there wasn’t anything Gasquet could really do. No one could have lived with Murray in that set, which he took 6-0 in 27 minutes.

That took the sails right out of Gasquet and Murray won 5-7 7-6 6-0 6-2.

Last up on centre was our unlikely QF – Stosur v Pironkova. Stosur has serious history on this surface and is playing like she did a few years ago- huge forehand and serious craft on the clay.

Pironkova put up a decent fight but Stosur had too much power. She won 6-4 7-6. Isn’t it great to see her at the sharp end of a tournament again?
