French Open Day 12 Round Up

Today was still catch up day at Roland-Garros, with two men’s quarter finals and two ladies to be played. First up on Chatrier was Djokovic against Berdych. The bad news- Djokovic led their head to head 23-2. The good news? One of Berdych’s wins was on clay…

But back to the bad news- Berdych had no answer for Nole today, the world number one was in ruthless mood, knowing he was playing catch up, and he was a comfortable winner, 6-3 7-5 6-3

Next up was Serena v Putintseva. Serena had won their only two previous meetings in straight sets, and on paper it looked incredibly one sided.

Putintseva though, hadn’t seen the odds. A crafty player rather than a powerful one, she out played a slightly nervous looking Serena in the first set and took it 7-5. An upset was on the cards…

Needless to say, after a few grunts and some screams, Serena threw everything into the second set and took it 6-4. Into the third and the momentum was all with Serena- despite Putintseva saving three match points, she couldn’t foce the upset and Serena progressed, 5-7 6-4 6-1

Over on Suzanne-Lenglen, an evenly matched 13th seed Thiem took on 12th seed Goffin. Goffin led the head to head 4-2, and on clay they were 1-1. Evenly matched indeed!

Goffin took the first set 6-4 but there was very very little in it. Thiem wasn’t put off and came back to take the second in a tight breaker 9-7.

That seemed to give him confidence and he started hitting some beautiful winners, and ground down Goffin with his consistency. Thiem eventually won 4-6 7-6 6-4 6-1 and goes on to play Djokovic. Lots of people will fancy that one as a potential upset…

Next came the unlikely QF – Bertens v 8th seed Bacsinszky. Neither were particularly fancied before the start of this slam, but both have played some really great tennis. Bertens won 7-5 6-2, she served better than her opponent and took more of her opportunities. Meaning of course, that our semi finals are set!!
