We start in Group A where Arctic Monkeys went on to (Brian)Storm to the top of the group. The Beautiful South put up a strong fight but couldn't make a Perfect 10 so went out behind Madness, who took One Step Beyond in the competition. WINNERS: Arctic Monkeys RUNNER UP: Madness

In Group B, the closest race so far saw The Jam giving Kasabian The Bitterest Pill to pip them to 2nd spot by a handful of votes. But Radiohead? They must have been Daydreaming as we had the first real shock of the tournament. WINNER: The Jam RUNNER UP: Kasabian

To Group C and another shock. Oasis blew Half The World Away to cruise to victory with The Smiths and The Who battling it out for 2nd spot. The Smiths didn't Panic and took the runners up place, knocking The Who out. "They Won't Get Fooled Again" screamed their fans at full time. WINNER: Oasis RUNNER UP: The Smiths

In Group D, The Stone Roses were not made to be Fools (Gold) as they romped home in first place. That left New Order and The Clash to battle it out for 2nd spot. The Clash ended up seizing "Complete Control" to pinch their place in the knockout stage. Less a Blue Monday and more a Dark Friday for New Order. WINNER: The Stone Roses RUNNER UP: The Clash

In Group E, Jagger and his cronies romped home in first place and will take the Satisfaction of facing a group runner up in the next round. Coldplay and Led Zeppelin was a titanic battle that went into injury time. THANKFULLY Zeppelin Ramble on to the knockout stage by one percent. ONE! PHEW! WINNER: The Rolling Stones RUNNER UP: Led Zeppelin

Group F was a complete mismatch with The Beatles and Pink Floyd securing the top spot with time to spare. John, Paul. Ringo and George were keen to Get Back to training for the knockouts as they aim to live up to their pre-tournament favourite role. WINNER: The Beatles RUNNER UP: Pink Floyd

Over to Group G where Queen were on their throne in no.1 position despite coming Under Pressure from Joy Division, who also reached the knockout stages. Muse and Small Face never got off the ground and their Time Is Running Out to make it back in time for their Glastonbury slot tonight. WINNER: Queen RUNNER UP: Joy Division

Finally in Group H, Mogwai never got off the ground and it was left to Blur to Go Out and win the group. The Kinks ended up coming second as they were the Destroyer of The Cure's hopes of making it through to the knockout stages. WINNER: Blur RUNNER UP: The Kinks

An emotional day. A day of joy for some and utter pain and fear for others. And we're not even going to mention the EU result... Here's what you have to look forward to on day two tomorrow...
