Some sad, if unsurprising, news this morning that horse racing great Kieren Fallon has hung up his saddle after a long battle with depression. We take a look back at 7 races from his career that stand out as major successes in an esteemed racing journey.

RACE 1: 1997 Epsom Oaks Despite starting the race the odds on favourite, there were fears that Reams of Verse's pedigree lacked the stamina influences needed for the race. Her main rivals in the betting were her stable companion Yashmak and the Irish-trained Ebadiyla. In the end, a length and a half victory and a first Oaks triumph for Fallon.

RACE 2: 1997 1000 Guineas Wince started 4/1 favourite in a field of twenty-two fillies for the 1000 Guineas. The filly had been the subject of heavy betting support after a trial gallop in which she had finished a close second to the stable's leading colt Enrique. A close race was won by Fallon by half a length, his 2nd of four 1000 Guineas triumphs.

RACE 3: 2003 Epsom Derby Ridden for the first time by Fallon, Kris Kin seemed to be struggling in the early stages, and turned into the straight in eighth place. Eventually winning by a length, the winning time of 2:33.35 was the third fastest recorded in a Derby at Epsom.

RACE 4: 2005 Arlington Million Trailing until the final furlong, a sublime burst of speed through the centre of the track saw Powerscourt romp home to victory in one of the biggest races in America, cementing Fallon's name as a great on both sides of the Atlantic.

RACE 5: 2007 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe Aboard Dylan Thomas, Fallon surged through with 200m to run and looked to be coasting to an easy victory. A late move almost saw him pipped to the post, but Dylan Thomas took the win. Fallon later describing him as "the best horse I've ever ridden".

RACE 6: 2012 St James' Palace Stakes Most Improved was ridden near the front of the field by Fallon and took the lead with two furlongs left to run. He stayed at the front and went on to win by ¾ length from Hermival, in a field that also included Irish 2000 Guineas winner Power and Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner Wrote.

RACE 7: 2014 2000 Guineas It had been 8 years since Fallon had won a classic after race fixing allegations and positive drugs tests dogged Fallon's career from 2006. However, he put these behind him to win the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket in 2014 aboard Night of Thunder.
