First Night of the Proms

Evening all and welcome to the Royal Albert Hall (actually my living room) for the opening night of the Henry Wood Promenade Concert Series, i.e. The PROMS Read the Preview here -

In a packed programme tonight (no, this is not a Two Ronnies sketch) we will be hearing the following Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Fantasy Overture 'Romeo and Juliet' Edward Elgar Cello Concerto in E minor Sergei Prokofiev Cantata 'Alexander Nevsky'

Here's the Leader of the Orchestra.

And now the Maestro to start us off on time. Starting with a rousing rendition of La Marseillaise in honour of the victims in Nice. Classy touch.

Standing Ovation. The prommers are standing anyway but you know what I mean.

Tchaikovsky, like a lot of composers, was a tinker as per the Leicester City manager. 3 Versions of this one, which one shall we get? Final one I think.

This is the one we're all familiar with, including the famous love theme in Dflat major. Apparently this is a “romantic key”. Lot to be said about that kind of thing in general and we may come back to that at some point in the future. You have been warned - pay attention, questions will be asked at the end.

Nice shot of the harpa there ... very slow and quiet introduction to this, starting in E major if I'm not mistaken. Building to a tutti, more like what you expect from Mr T. Timpani roll !

Starting to hot up now - this is a fantasy overture so all the tunes you'd expect to hear in the full ballet will be previewed and embellished.

Here's the theme you may be familiar with, starting on what appears to be a clarinet ...
