Glorious Goodwood: Day Two

Hello and welcome to ByTheMin coverage of day two of the Glorious Goodwood festival with me David Weldon (@theweldon88). The feature today is Sussex Stakes - one of the feature of the week. The first three from the Royal Ascot meeting face off again in what has been dubbed as the Dual of the Downs. Just to wet the appetite here is a replay of that race.

So the order of play for Day Two. Four races to be covered from Goodwood were the ground is Good To Firm all over. 14:00 2m5f Goodwood stakes (Handicap) All 20 run 14:35 1m4f Gordon Stakes (Group 3) All 9 run 15:10 1m Sussex Stakes (Group 1) All 10 run 15:45 5f Molecomb Stakes (Group 3) 9 run NR 6 (Bad Scope), 8 (Lame), 12 (Not Eaten Up)

The Sussex is an mouth-watering affair. The Gurkha listed as the unlucky loser in the St James Palace at Royal Ascot and currently been backed in favouritism. He has since run second in the Eclipse at Sandown, again there was excuses. Maybe not seeing out the trip and definitely the ground. You need to go back to his French Guineas win were he was so impressive routing a decent field.

Next in the market is Galileo Gold. Now this horse has been consistently overlooked by the betting public. He is not the fanciest horse but has done noting wrong in his runs to date. Winner of the English Guineas and the aforementioned St James Palace. He was unlucky in the Irish equivalent when not getting the clearest of runs. Concerns are the quicker ground and may not have anymore improvement.

The third main contender is Irish Guineas winner Awtaad. That day he had everything in favour including the ground. Which on that day at The Curragh was desperate. He needs to show his liking for this surface. Awtaad is a very leggy horse with a high knee action and I would be surprised if good enough for win purposes.

Coverage about to start over on Channel 4, what a days racing in store!

I will look at the rest of the runners and riders in the Sussex Stakes throughout the day, but first lets look at the latest odds for the opener. The Cashel Man is the current market leader at 11/2 best price. If you are having a bet make sure you shop around as some firms are paying 5 places.

Coverage starts with a look back at yesterdays action.

Performance of the day was Dutch Connection who finally got it all together to win the Lennox Stakes.

A look back at previous winners of the Sussex. It has a quality roll of honour. Frankel x 2 Toronado Kingman and last year Solow
