Day 96 - (9th April 2017) - My first HONOURS BOARD competition of 2017

ByTheMinute Create A Story

Hi, I am @robertscross and welcome to Day 96 of My Golf Life 2017 I think about golf every day, without fail. Maybe not daily but hourly or even (no pun intended) “ByTheMinute” I am a golf junkie. I can’t help it. If you’ve missed any days then have a little look here

So, every golf club has them, my last club (The Millbrook GC) lined them up to coincide with each of the PGA Tour “Majors” I am of course talking about GOLF CLUB HONOURS BOARD competitions

When you turn up and on that day (sometimes two days or over period of time and rounds) you play well enough to win and for that your name will go down in history, engraved on the boards spread out in most golf clubhouses.

On April 9th 2017 – I played in my first competition of this sort for almost 12 months and I have to say I was pretty excited!

Founders Member Cup is a bogey/par format which historically I hate – its match play against the course, the only issue being the course has already finished the course and for each hole to get a “half” you have to get a nett par.

To me this takes away the “grinding” aspect which I seem to have become accustomed too – double bogey or two thrown in each round but also a spattering of birdies to even it out. But after such a long time out it was a chance to get on the board (again – my name is on the honours board at my current club!)

After losing the first hole – tee shot out onto the driving range. I wish I hadn’t bothered.

Things didn’t improve much – I managed to “half” the third and actually won a hole (nett birdie) on 7th. I quickly found myself 4 down after 9 holes!

Things went from bad to worse and I don’t want to talk about things too much – I finished 9 down and only saved from the wooden spoon by a couple of friendly No Returns!!

I was seriously disappointed – I’ve been working really hard on my swing since December but due to the need to rest my wrist I have been struggling to get some quality range time in and have just been playing, even my putting has been poor – not helped by below standard greens it has to be said.
