Giro D'Italia: Stage 16

Good afternoon. Steph here for today's coverage. I will begin by paying my respects to those sadly killed and injured in the appalling Manchester concert attack last night.

The peloton also held a minute's silence in tribute to the victims and to Nicky Hayden the Moto GP racer who lost his life yesterday after a cycling accident last week.

So to today. Its a beast of a stage! We've already had the cat 1 Montirolo which was also given the title Cima Scarponi in memory of Michele. That's followed by the Cima Coppi - the 1st ascent of the Stelvio and the highest point of the Giro this year. On the descent we briefly cross into Switzerland then return to the Stelvio via the Umbrail pass before the final descent into Bormio.

The Cima Scarponi was taken by LL Sanchez - Astana teammate of Scarponi and a touching tribute that Landa and Fraile agreed themselves not to contest it. Astana are also using bidons with pictures of Michele's famous parrot today.

Ok, the riders are well into the Hors Category ascent of the Stelvio now. 40 switchbacks to the top! There's a breakaway with a 2m28s gap over the Maglia Rosa group. There's been much discussion over the amount of time Quintana can claw back from Dumoulin today but I have to say Tom is looking mighty fine in pink to me. Maybe he's got enough in those legs to limit his losses all the way to Milan!

There's about 25 riders in the breakaway so I won't give you the full list. They include 4 members of Team Sky, Kiry was pulling for Landa but has dropped away now. Plus 3 Movistar fellas who will prove important for a bridging Quintana at some point. Kruijswijk is also in there and Rolland. The gap to pink has come down to 1m50s with 88km to go.

Sunweb have got problems as Geschke is dropped! Dumoulin only has Ten Dam left up front to work for him. We await a big move from Quintana and/or Nibali. Down to 10 men in the break as Deignan applies pressure at the front.

Tom had a strop then as some spectators get a bit too close with their enthusiasm - a bit of a shove from a large Colombian fan to try helping Quintana.

Here's the breakaway remainder. Looking very Spanish heavy but the important thing is the 2 Movistar guys in there. This also means there's another one between Quintana and the break somewherewhich could be handy should he make a move soon.

The GC guys are still 2m23s down on the leaders. Lots of little groups in between.
