Afternoon all! The final tournament of the year is about to get underway in London, and it's the veteran vs the newbie to start things off as Roger Federer takes on Jack Sock. It's @hannakin__ here with updates of this opening match.

The players are just now coming onto the court. Federer has a 3-0 record in the head to head here, Sock has yet to win a set against him. This is Federer's 15th appearance at the tour finals, he's the most successful player at this tournament with six titles, and the only one of the 2017 field to have previously lifted the trophy.

Sock filled the final berth in the Race to London, soaring from 24th to 9th in the rankings after winning his maiden Master's title in Paris. He's also become the no.1 American. Given he wasn't even aware he was still in the race a fortnight ago, this match caps off a brilliant run-in for Sock.

We're ready to play, Federer has elected to return so it's Sock to start things off... Sock runs around his backhand but ends up too far wide leaving acres of space for the Federer forehand winner, 0-15. Forehand error from Sock but a first ace of the match gets him on the board, 15-30. A forehand down the line winner for Federer brings up an early BREAK POINT...

And FEDERER BREAKS at the first time of asking. Another forehand down the line winner, right onto the baseline. Perfect start for Roger. 1*-0

Federer with his first error of the match as a backhand loops wide, 30-15. Poor backhand into the net from Fed followed by the first double fault of the match and Sock gets back to deuce. Close margins, but Federer holds as Sock goes just wide with a backhand. 2-0*

Lovely backhand return winner by Federer, right to the corner for 30-15. An error off the Federer racket helps Sock to 40-15, Sock then looks to hammer a forehand down the line, his first finds the net, but his second is inch perfect and the American gets his first hold for 2-1.

Sock gets a bit of luck with a forehand, looked wide but I think it just dropped on the line for 0-15. He can't capitalise though, unforced error on the next point followed by a Federer second shot forehand winner behind Sock, then a Federer service winner for 40-15. Another nice inside out forehand to the corner from Federer and he holds to keep his lead, 3-1*.

Couple of strong serves down the line from Sock get him to a 40-0 lead, but he follows that up with consecutive double faults and it's 40-30. Oh what a stunning return. Cross court backhand pass from Federer, deuce. Sock finds his serve again to avoid anymore trouble, holds to keep in distance at 3*-2

A rare moment where Federer finds himself a bit stranded at the net. Sock finds a down the line pass with ease, 30-30. Deuce, serve and volley off the second serve from Federer, and he just about gets away with it as Sock sends his forehand wide. AD Federer and a forehand error from Sock brings up the hold.
