Big Fight Preview: Lomachenko vs Rigondeaux

Boxing fans are salivating at the prospect of Saturday night's main event from New York, pitting two of boxing's pound-for-pound greats against one another as Vasyl Lomachenko defends the WBO super-featherweight title against WBA super-bantamweight king Guillermo Rigondeaux. Alistair Sargent, who will be covering the big fight right here on By The Minute, explains why everyone is so excited

Name: Vasyl Lomachenko Alias: Hi-Tech Age: 29 Nationality: Ukrainian Professional Record: 9 wins (7 KOs) - 1 loss WBO super-featherweight world champion, and former WBO featherweight world champion Ring Magazine #3 pound-for-pound boxer

Name: Guillermo Rigondeaux Alias: El Chackal Age: 37 Nationality: Cuban Professional Record: 17 wins (11 KOs) - 0 losses - 1 no contest WBA (super) super-bantamweight champion, and former unified WBA and WBO super-bantamweight champion Ring Magazine #4 pound-for-pound boxer

Wait, so everyone is going mad about two guys who have less than 30 pro-fights between them. What is that all about?

Well, that comes down to the small fact that these two are among the greatest amateur boxers to ever exist. Lomachenko boats an amateur record of 396 wins with only 1 loss; Rigondeaux claims 463 wins with 12 defeats.

Oh, and there is the small matter of both men winning two Olympic gold medals. Lomachenko won featherweight gold in 2008 and lightweight gold in 2012. Rigondeaux won the bantamweight tournament in 2000 and 2004. This will be the first time ever in a professional ring that two double Olympic champions will come face-to-face and that is worth getting excited about.

Well with two guys who were so sound and successful in the amateur set-up you should expect a technical masterclass. Both Lomachenko and Rigondeaux are supremely talented pugilists with remarkable movement, evasiveness and masterful shot selection. Don't expect to see a toe-to-toe slug fest. Expect a chess match, a cat and mouse affair as both men glide in and out of range with aplomb.
