Evening all. Jo Konta has had to get used the the label of 'Great British hope', but for the next two weeks down under she is undoubtedly that. The British number 1 kicks off her first grand slam campaign of 2018 tonight against Madison Brengle. It's hannakin__ here with the coverage.

Women’s singles draws are always stacked in tennis no matter where you land. Konta finds herself in the same quarter as the current no.1 Simona Halep, and former no.1 Karolina Pliskova. Here’s what her projected route to the final looks like: 1R – Madison Brengle 2R- Anna Blinkova 3R – Barbora Strycova 4R – Karolina Pliskova QF- Simona Halep SF – Garbine Muguruza F – Caroline Wozniacki

Konta's H2H with Madison Brengle is 1-3, but there were far more tricky potential first round opponent s lurking in the draw.

We're ready to go, Brengle to serve. Starts out with a double fault - major assist from the sun. Nice backhand winner from Konta for 0-30 Even at 30-30 as Konta goes for a forehand down the line that drifts wide. Couple more errors from Konta and Brengle holds to start.

Proper hard hitting from both to begin Konta's first service game, she nets a forehand for 0-15. Nice stuff from Konta, drags Brengle out wide with a forehand to the corner and safely in for the volley winner. 15-15. Potentially tricky volley for Konta there at a high angle with the sun blazing, but she does well, 30-15.

Konta once more goes for a backhand down the line, and this one arrows into the corner. 40-15 and a strong first serve seals a good opening hold. 1-1 first set.

Brengle loops a forehand up and once again it's really well taken by Konta on the volley. Has looked sharp on those in these early stage. 15-30. Nice forehand winner out wide to the line from Brengle, 30-30. She goes for that same shot on 40-30 but misses and it's deuce. Cracking forehand return winner on the backhand from Konta , BREAK POINT

Saved, Konta looking to craft a backhand winner out wide but it's off the net and out. She'll get another crack at it though after Brengle's cross court backhand just misses the line. And KONTA BREAKS. Brengle moves in to cover the cross court angle, but Konta moves inside quickly and finds the backhand down the line winner. Lovely start from the Brit. 2*-1

Konta follows that up with a quick hold to 15 on her serve. Really getting that backhand firing. Brengle needs to lift her game, and does so on her next game, looking to produce a bit more power to match Konta. She gets a hold to 15 of her own, 3*-2 first set.

Already a fourth ace of the match for Konta, 15-15. Brengle goes for the lob with Konta close in, Konta gets back to it but sends her overhead arrowing into the net. 30-30 Brengle gets herself into a rally, but looking for a cross court angle can only find the net. 40-30 and a fifth ace down the middle for the hold. 4-2*
