Errol Spence Jr

Boxing

ByTheMinBoxing

Hello everyone. Happy 2018! It's time to kick off the year's boxing action and we've not one, but two, unbeaten IBF world champions in action tonight. Errol Spence Jr makes the first defence of his welterweight belt against Lamont Peterson in the main event. Before then 26-year-old lightweight champ Robert Easter faces Javier Fortuna. Fire up the band...

Welcome along. Alistair Sargent here to describe the action for you. Excited to see Errol Spence back in action for the first time since he ripped the welterweight world title from Kell Brook back in May. Surely he'll have too much for Lamont Peterson this evening?! A nice chance as well to see Robert Easter, a massive lightweight who'll want in the reckoning with Linares & Garica.

Javier Fortuna and Robert Easter are both in the ring. We're about to have our first world title fight of the year folks! Some housekeeping though - Fortuna CAN NOT win Easter's IBF lightweight title after coming in at 136.5 lbs yesterday. Easter could, I think, lose the belt with a defeat though.

Easter is unbeaten in 20 fights, with 14 KOs. Fortuna's record is 33-1-1. Easter is 5 foot 11. He is enormous for a lightweight. Big favourite here this evening in Brooklyn, NY. Jimmy Lennon Jr. is our MC and he is giving the fighters their big introductions as I type.

Ricky Gonzalez will be the referee. Should we go all twelve rounds we'll be calling on the cards of Glenn Feldman, John McKaie and Kevin Morgan. The two fighters touch gloves. We're all set to kick start 2018...

Easter - Fortuna Round 1: Easter towering over Fortuna! How can Fortuna possibly have been the one coming over the 135lb limit?! Easter takes centre ring and makes a positive start with the jab. All Robert Easter in the opening two minutes but he can't find the target with much. Fortuna comes alive in the final minute with a flurry of work but it's not enough to take the round.

Rnd 2: Aggressive start from Fortuna who comes out swinging. Good hand speed but he is checked by the ref for holding behind the head. And a second telling off for Fortuna who is deducted a point for punching behind the head. No warning for that. Harsh. Great round this as both men unload. Easter fighting fire with fire but Fortuna is the busier over the first two minutes.

Right hook to the body lands twice for Fortuna but the follow up to the head is off target. Easter not able to establish the jab at all. Frantic pace from Fortuna who impresses in the second. Great round for him that is damaged by losing the point. Makes it a 9-9 round. 19-18 for Easter.

Rnd 3: Easter misses with the lead left and Fortuna counters with a short left hand. Slower pace that suits Easter who is able to keep Fortuna at distance and line up a straight right hand to the chin. Fortuna responds with a right hook.

Arms tangle as Fortuna tries to land another right hook to the body. Easter covers up to block the hooks from Fortuna. Right uppercut in close by Easter but Fortuna lands a left hand and Easter felt that! Tries to increase the punishment on the ropes but Easter tucks up and avoids the shots. Cagey round. Easter probably just about shading it. 29-27
