WGC Mexico: 1st Round

Hello, good evening and welcome, wherever you are. Right now, it's 20:58 in the snowy West Midlands of England. On the other side of the globe, it's the first round of the first WGC event of the year - in the not very snowy Mexico - and it's live, right here on BTM. @dralanwilson here with your minute by minute coverage.

As we join the action, it's none other than Blubber Watson at the top of the leaderboard.

Defending champion DJ has just teed off on 5 and he's currently -3 and, apparently. not playing that well. I'll take that any day. Playing partner Jon Rahm launches one into the rough. Final player in this group is last week's winner and he's played into the prime location.

Good to see England's Chris Paisley up there and a good showing from the Spanish contingent too. Here's Rafa putting on 5 and he nails it. Moves to -5. That's hole 5 on his back 9 as he started on the 10th. if you get my drift.

Ad break, so a chance to remind ourselves what this is supposed to be all about. The 4 WGC events are meant to be showcases for the best in world golf, but they've (in recent years) been more or less confined to North America. So much for that. At least they get the "best" part right - top 50 in the world augmented by various other criteria giving about 70 in the field or so.

The best of the best of the best. SIR !!

OK, back to the coverage. Rahm from the rough - scrambles up the front and .... almost HOLES IT !! Trundles up to about a foot away. MAGNIFICENT.

Rickie, playing with Justin Rose, trickles his putt past the left edge. Meanwhile Blubber with a putt for par - nope - drops back to -6, through 12. DJ from the RH rough. Tree won't bother him much but he punches it up to the green side bunker. Sergio from behind the trees and he's telling the ball to sit. It does.

Tommy F on a bit of a roll recently but not had a great day today. +2 at the moment. Some chat about bell curves and yardage. I've wandered into a stats lecture by mistake. Help. OK, Casey has done the math and now has some kind of wedge in his hand on the 9th. 2/10 - so bad even the camera could not find it.

DJ from about 6ft for par after splashing out of the bunker. 270 degree special. OOOOH, a dropped shot and back to -2. Very up and down card for the reigning champ. Rahm taps in for birdie and -3. Marc Leishman, alongside Casey, plays a corker. But no idea what he's on as we skip straight to Phil, well back on the 4th. Safe enough.
