Paris-Nice Stage 5

Cycling

ByTheMinCycle

Hello everyone and welcome to Stage 5 of this year's Race to the Sun! I'm Ewan and I'll be giving you coverage of today's cycling. We have a fairly hilly stage today with a fairly flat race to the finish. As we join in the stage there is 30km to go and the 4 man breakaway has a gap of 3 minutes 30 seconds.

The Breakaway has been up ahead for the whole race, this breakaway consists of El Fares, Edet, Politt and Cousin. As such these men have picked up many KOM Points. Overall, Cousin got the most so far, 21 points. El Fares has gained 12, Edet 13 and Politt 6. A few others in the Peloton also gained some, mainly Grellier and Perichon who gained 3 each.

With that out the way, let's get down to business. With 14.3km to go the final 6.4% gradient climb will begin, there is a small possibility of attacks from a few trying to get away however I doubt it. The climb will end with 13km to go.

Also here's a map of today's stage.

The leading quartet now only have 20km to go, however their gap has steadily fallen to 2:30 thanks to Lotto-Soudal and Quick-Step. Meanwhile some of my sources are saying Degenkolb has fallen off the back of the Peloton.

As all the sprint trains begin to form they begin a 19km lap which will bring them right back to where they are to finish.

Politt attacks from the breakaway!

He successfully gets away and the remaining 3 Frenchmen almost accept it.

The Climb has begun! Politt will probably be able to win this climb, but can he hold on afterwards?

The Frenchmen finally reach the main part of the climb and attack! Can they reach Politt? I doubt it.
